    Pathology Department Records, 1923-1966

    Major topics in this series include, but are not limited to, the conception of the department (based, in part, on the Johns Hopkins model) and development of pathology research at Duke. The administrative files in this series cover topics related to the day-to-day operation of the department. They include budgets and patient statistics for both the department and Duke Hospital from the 1930s until the 1960s, the development of departmental policies and procedures which impacted the hospital and medical school, and the set-up of subspecialties within the department such as neuropathology. Staffing, equipment, and the physical plant are also covered in these administrative records. Another group within this series includes student and staff applications with evidence of the evolution of the student and staff applications process.       Ross E. McKinney Jr. Records, 1950-2015

      Ross E. McKinney Jr, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases specialist at Duke. He joined Duke faculty in 1985, and his area of research is pediatric HIV clinical research. While at Duke, McKinney has held the positions of director of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Vice Dean for Research for the Duke University School of Medicine, and Director of the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities & History of Medicine.           Alfred Blalock (1899-1964), surgeon-in-chief of the John Hopkins Hospital, professor, and director of the surgery department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1941-1964), was one of two physicians who developed the "blue baby" operation and treatments for surgical shock. Collection contains correspondence, memorabilia, photographs, scrapbooks, tributes, committee materials, biographical materials, and reprints.             Personal/Biographical, 1910-2004

            Contains materials that document Easley's personal life. Types of materials in this series are awards and honors; biographical information; Easley's philanthropy, clippings mostly pertaining to Easley's career and accomplishments but also includes an article describing an automobile collision on Guess Road at the Eno River bridge that caused permanent damage to Easley's leg, as it was left shorter than the other after the fractures healed and required her to wear special orthopedic shoes for the rest of her life. Series also contains headshots and portraits of Easley and photographs of her at various times during her life: her Idaho wedding, late 1940s photo in Durham with her husband before a trip; Easley at a medical meeting in Havana, Cuba; photographs of Easley with her husband and their orchid collection; and other photographs of Easley. Memorial materials are also included. The bulk of the memorial materials pertain to Easley's death, but there is a small amount of materials about the Boulware sisters (Lula Inez Boulware and Mary Ella Boulware Taylor) who worked for Easley and her husband. Easley met the sisters during the Great Depression in the 1930s in a hallway outside of a Duke Hospital operating room. Their bother, Glenn, had recently died, and a Duke doctor wanted his body for dissection at Duke. Their mother, Mattie McCullough Boulware, wanted to bury her son's body. At the time, Lula and Mary were working in the operating rooms at Duke and the doctor told them if they did not turn over their brother's body they would lose their jobs. Easley intervened, Lula and Mary kept their jobs, and their brother was interred. In the early 1940s, when Easley opened her own medical practice, she employed both sisters. Materials date from 1910 to 2004.

                                  Posters, 2006-2018

                                  Contains posters presented by Stacey Bennett a various conferences. The "Use of High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) in Neurocritical Care Patients" poster was presented at the Neurocritical Care Society's (NCS) Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Respiratory Care Congress in Austin, Texas. This poster was the first poster presented at either conference where the project was led by a nurse practitioner, as well as the first project lead by a female in the NCS group. The project the poster documents changed what medical practitioners knew about ventilating patients with traumatic brain injury by demonstrating that lives could be saved if high frequency ventilation was used and that it was safe to do so. This led to a change in international medical practice by changing what was once an absolute contraindication to a relative contraindication. As a result, patients began to receive newer alternative modes of ventilation through high frequency ventilation techniques. Additionally, more research was conducted by the US military and others because of this project. The "Smashing the National Average for Complication Rates Related to Central Line Insertions: A 5-Year Journey" poster was presented at the NCS Annual Meeting in Boca Raton, Florida. It was also supposed to be presented at the Society of Critical Care in Medicine Quality Improvement Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, but the conference was cancelled because of Hurricane Florence. The poster was presented online instead. This poster outlines 5 years of work to get to a 0% complication rate for central line placement in Duke's NeuroICU. Materials date from 2006 to 2018.

                                    C. J. Lambertsen Papers, 1930-2004

                                    Christian James (C. J.) Lambertsen (1917-2011) worked as a professor of pharmacology, director of the Institute for Environmental Medicine, and the founding director of the Environmental Biomedical Stress Data Center in 1985 at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine. He designed the Lambertsen Amphibious Respiratory Unit (LARU), which was the first widely used, closed-circuit Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) in the United States.
