Abstract:
Helen Kaiser (1900-1988), was a professor and the first Director of Physical Therapy at Duke. She was also an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), serving as President of APTA from 1938 to 1940 and member of the Board of Directors from 1926 to 1930 and 1940 to 1946. This collection contains professional writings produced and collected by Kaiser over the course of her career and course materials compiled during Kaiser's time as a Professor of Physical Therapy at Duke. Other materials include correspondence, booklets, pamphlets, articles, committee and meeting minutes, reports, course descriptions and evaluations, floorplans, blueprints, grant files, photographic materials, and a scrapbook pertaining to Kaiser's time as the Director of Physical Therapy at Duke, as well as her personal life. Materials range in date from 1903 to 2005, with the bulk of the material dating from 1912 to 1988.

Types of material include reprints, writings, and publications written and collected by Helen Kaiser over the course of her professional career; course outlines, examinations, and other course material compiled during Kaiser's time as a Professor of Physical Therapy at Duke University Medical Center; and correspondence, booklets, pamphlets, articles, committee and meeting minutes, reports, course descriptions and evaluations, floorplans, blueprints, grant files, photographic materials, and a scrapbook pertaining to Kaiser's time as the Director of Physical Therapy at Duke, as well as her personal life. Materials date from 1903 to 2005, with the bulk of the material dating from 1912 to 1988.

Biographical / historical:

Helen Louise Kaiser was born in 1900 in Michigan to John Kaiser and Ida Reutner. In 1920, Kaiser graduated from Sargent College in Boston before receiving a Physical Therapy Certificate from the Harvard University Course for Graduates in 1921. She served as an assistant instructor for the Harvard Course and as a visiting instructor at Children's Hospital, Boston from 1921 to 1922. Between 1922 and 1926, she was the Chief Physical Therapist at the Detroit Orthopedic Clinic.
In 1926, she became the Chief Physical Therapist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1943, Kaiser established the Department of Physical Therapy at Duke University and served as the first Director of Physical Therapy and Associate Professor of Physical Therapy. Kaiser stepped down as Director of Physical Therapy in 1969 and retired in 1970.
From 1945 to 1946, Kaiser took a leave of absence from Duke to establish a Physical Therapy School in Greece and to serve as Director of Rehabilitation Services for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency and the Near East Foundation in Athens.
Kaiser was an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). She helped organize the Michigan Physical Therapy Association and served as the vice president. From 1926 to 1931, she served as President of the Cleveland Physical Therapy Association and as the President of the Ohio Physical Therapy Association from 1937 to 1938. She was President of APTA from 1938 to 1940 and served on the Board of Directors from 1926 to 1930 and 1940 to 1946.
Kaiser died in 1988.
