Biographical / historical:

Charles Watson Wharton was born in Smithfield, North Carolina, in 1909 to Lillan Ashely Benton and Lacy Donnell Wharton. He was a physician in Smithfield where his father had also practiced medicine. Charles' brother, Don Wharton, was a journalist for magazines such as "Readers Digest," "Look," and the "Saturday Evening Post" during World War II. Wharton married Ethel Margaret Carlson Wharton and died in 1990.
