Joseph C. Greenfield began his career at Duke in 1956, holding various positions at Duke University Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. His positions have included chief of Duke University Medical Center's Cardiology Division (1981-1989) and chairman of Duke University Medical Center's Department of Medicine (1983-1995). He became a James B. Duke Distinguished Professor in 1981. Materials date from 1940 to 2013.

Biographical / historical:

Joseph C. Greenfield Jr., was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1931. He received his bachelor's degree in History from Emory University in 1954, and his medical degree from the Emory University School of Medicine in 1956. He began his career at Duke University Medical Center as an intern and junior and senior assistant resident in medicine from 1956 to 1959. He left Duke to work at the National Heart Institutes of Health from 1959 to 1962, but returned in 1962 as an associate in medicine.
Since 1962, Greenfield has held various positions at Duke University Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. These positions include chief of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center's Cardiology Section (1963-1983), chief of Duke University Medical Center's Cardiology Division (1981-1989), chairman of Duke University Medical Center's Department of Medicine (1983-1995), and director of the Heart Station at both Duke and the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (1971-2001). Greenfield became an associate professor of Cell Biology (Physiology) at Duke in 1978, and a James B. Duke Distinguished Professor in 1981. Among the special projects that Greenfield was involved in while at Duke were the study of reperfusion therapies in acute coronary syndromes, efforts to promote cardiovascular care to rural areas by sending cardiologists to hospitals in remote communities to administer thrombolytic therapy, and the reorganization of the cardiac catheter lab to be adjacent to Duke University Hospital's emergency room.
He also served in the United States Public Health Service as senior assistant surgeon (1959-1961) and surgeon (1961-1962). Greenfield has belonged to numerous professional organizations, including Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Federation for Clinical Research (Senior Member), the American Society for Clinical Investigation (Senior Member), the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology (Emeritus Fellow), and the American College of Physicians (Emeritus Member). He has authored more than 200 publications, including papers, case reports, editorials, clinical reviews, book chapters, and poetry. His works include several books and supplemental materials regarding the history of the Duke University's Division of Cardiology and Department of Medicine.
