Biographical / historical:

In 1930, Duke University established the first graduate program in the nation for the training of hospital administrators. Wilburt C. Davison, the first School of Medicine Dean, believed there needed to be a program to train hospital administers in order to raise the standards of health care. Students were required to work in a variety of departments including hospital admissions, the administrative office, the out-patient clinic, and the storeroom in order to gain broad experience working in different parts of a hospital system. Originally conceived as a certificate program, the program was reorganized in 1962 and began awarding a Master of Hospital Administration degree. In 1974, the program became a department of Duke University, the Department of Health Administration. This degree was offered until 1986, when core courses were moved to Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. In 1991, the Duke MBA Health Sector Management program was introduced into Fuqua's MBA curriculum.
