Biographical / historical:

James Buchanan Duke established the Duke Endowment in 1924. The endowment provided funds to form Duke's School of Medicine and Duke Hospital. The first patient to Duke Hospital was admitted on July 21, 1930. At that time, the hospital had 549 beds and 55 bassinets. In 1957, the hospital opened a new seven-story addition that helped make Duke Hospital the second largest private general hospital in the South. The new addition included clinic areas, operating rooms, wards, laboratories, and 109 new beds. A new hospital, the North division, opened in 1980 and connected to the previous hospital, the South division, through a personnel rapid transit system (PRT). The Children's Health Center opened in 2000, and the Duke Cancer Center opened in 2012. Duke University Hospital expanded in 2013 with the opening eighth-floor of the Duke Medicine Pavilion.
