Includes files documenting the "Pop Up Think Tank" Justine Strand de Oliveira helped organize while working in the United Kingdom. After retiring from Duke in January 2017, Strand de Oliveira moved to London and worked as a professor of physician associate studies (they use associate, not assistant) at Barts and The London School of Medicine. In this position, she established a PA research group while head of the PA division. The "Pop Up Think Tank" took place over one day in July 2018 and included 10 workgroups on topics from resistance to new professions to clinic architectural design. The keynote speaker was Khassoum Diallo, PhD from the World Health Organization. Over the day, the groups reviewed what was known on each topic and proposed areas for future research, presenting to everyone at the end of the day. Includes the department's 2020 seasonal door decorating contest. Of particular note is how COVID-19 is represented on the department's doors including Santa wearing a mask with the Pfizer vaccine in one hand and the Moderna vaccine in the other. Department members voted on their favorite door without having to physically visit each door; all voting was done online. The Heaton Lab (door #2) received the most votes. Contains the June 10, 2020 letter written by the Duke Chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and sent to the Duke University School of Medicine (DUSOM) administration and faculty (including but not exclusive to Chancellor Washington, Dean Klotman, Senior Leadership, Communications Officers and Associate Deans). The Duke Chapter of the SNMA wrote the letter to initiate a dialogue about how to be an anti-racist institution after the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade. The letter focuses on how the administration communicated with the DUSOM, as well as the experiences and testimonials of Black students. The letter also includes SNMA's, Black students', and alumni's request to expand on the intentions stated in the June 3, 2020 letter written by the DUSOM administration that released a list of objectives intended to help uplift the Black community. The RJRC consists of 14 metrics that evaluate an academic center's curriculum and climate, student and faculty diversity, policing, racial integration of clinical care sites, treatment of workers, and research protocols. Ultimately, the RJRC seeks to encourage academic medical centers to take seriously their responsibility to fight racism in medicine, and while the RJRC is not exhaustive, it's intent is to be used as a tool to begin to evaluate and enact anti-racist medical education and care.
