Duke Med Interfaith (DMI) was founded after a student recognized the need for a safe space for students to meditate or pray while in medical school. DMI was recognized in January 2017 by the School of Medicine and the Graduate Professional School Council as an affinity group. After obtaining support for the creation of such a space from the School of Medicine administration and fellow students, saw a need for spaces, conversations, and education around spirituality as it pertains to health care, including understanding religious traditions of their colleagues, as well as those of patients under their care.
Membership to DMI is not limited to medical students and is open to all graduate and professional schools at Duke. All DMI events are open to all students and faculty, although some focus more specifically on the provider-patient relationship as it relates to faith.
DMI primarily host two different sets of events, social and educational. During social events, DMI celebrate religious holidays from different faith traditions and attendees can learn more about that holiday, discuss customs with people who celebrate it, and enjoy food and traditions that are relevant to that holiday. For DMI educational events, they bring in speakers to discuss a particular topic or series of topics. These include exploring the role of faith in medicine and chaplain and provider panels.
