Biographical / historical:

In 1930, the Duke School of Medicine established the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The department was renamed the Department of Microbiology in 1992 when the Department of Immunology became a separate department. In 2002, the Department of Microbiology merged with the Department of Genetics to form the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology.
