During the interview, Douglas discusses his background, how he chose to become a surgeon, the history of and multidisciplinary work in his Clinical Sciences Research Laboratory in the Department of Surgery, and that laboratory's use of clinical outcomes to describe and develop new surgical techniques.

During the interview, Jaffe discusses, as part of the recorded interview, how he helped locate the grave of Dr. William Stewart Halsted, a role model for Dr. Sabiston, when Sabiston was a visiting professor at the medical school at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.
