Dr. Bernard M. Jaffe, MD, is a general surgeon and Professor of Surgery, Emeritus at Tulane University Medical Center. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on June 24, 2019 by Emily Stewart as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the interview, Jaffe discusses, as part of the recorded interview, how he helped locate the grave of Dr. William Stewart Halsted, a role model for Dr. Sabiston, when Sabiston was a visiting professor at the medical school at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. There are additional notes about 2 Sabiston stories made during a phone conversation with Jaffe that were not recorded about how Jaffe met Sabiston and Sabiston's niece only calling him "Dr. Sabiston" and not "Uncle Dave".

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Bernard M. Jaffe, MD, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 3, 1939. He received his AB from the University of Rochester (1961) and his MD from the New York University School of Medicine (1964). He completed his residency in general surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University where he was Intern (1964-1965) and Assistant Resident (1965-1967). Afterwards, he was a Surgical Fellow at Washington University (1967-1968) and Academic Surgical Training Fellow (1967-1971), as well as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Microbiology at Washington University (1968-1969). Following this he was Assistant Resident (1969-1970) and Chief Resident (1970-1971) at Barnes Hospital.
Jaffe's academic positions include Assistant Professor of Surgery, Washington School of Medicine (1971-1975); Associate Professor of Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine (1975-1977); Professor of Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine (1977-1979); Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn (1979-1992); Professor and Vice-Chair, Department of Surgery, Chief of the Division of Surgical Research, Tulane University Medical Center (1992-2000); Professor of Surgery, Tulane University Medical Center (2000-2006); and Professor of Surgery, Emeritus, Tulane University Medical Center (2006-present).
In addition to Jaffe's medical career, his military service is as follows: Major to the Lieutenant Colonel United State Air Force Medical (USAF) Corps at David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California (1972-1974).
Jaffe, a general surgeon, has served on numerous editorial boards, published close to 400 articles, authored 2 books, and been the recipient of many awards and honors including Phi Beta Kappa; Alpha Omega Alpha; Sigma Xi; Golden Apple Award, Teacher of Year-Faculty Award, S.U.N.Y. Downstate Medical Center (1985-1986); Resident Teaching Award, Tulane University School of Medicine (1996); Hodgen Lectureship, St. Louis Surgical Society (l997); Owl Club Clinical Honor Roll (1994-1995 and 1997-1998); Tulane Surgery Resident-Energizer Award (1998-1999); Tulane Surgery Resident-Pineville Appreciation Award (1998-1999); Founder's Medal, Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (1998); and Resident Teaching Award, Tulane University School of Medicine (1999-2000).
Jaffe married Marlene Lambert Jaffe on June 4, 1961. They had 2 children.
