Contains photographs taken of Stead, wife Evelyn Stead, the Stead's home, Stead's colleagues, and of his son William Stead. Also includes some photographs of Barton F. Haynes (former chair of the Department of Medicine), William Stead, and Stead together. Also includes photographs of Stead with staff and/or patients at Duke University, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, and Emory University. Selected photographs were used by Haynes as editor of Stead's memoirs (1995). Photograph negatives were labeled by the donor to correspond with prints. Major subjects in this series are computer technology in medical research and diagnosis, physician's insurance, aging and end of life ethics and directives, North Carolina Medical Society, physician assistants, and the Myocardial Infarction Unit at Duke University. Also included in this series is a grant proposal for a mobile restraint device, intended to help patients become mobile more quickly following surgery. This series contains patient correspondence pertaining to patients, expert witness files, and personnel. Patient and expert witness files provide insight into Stead's investigative and diagnostic practices as a physician. Contains correspondence with other physicians and some patient correspondence. Correspondence primarily concerns evaluation, diagnosis, and responses to treatment of cardiac ailments. Materials are organized alphabetically and chronologically.

Contains materials from presentations by Stead and conferences that Stead attended. Types of materials include programs, correspondence, speeches, and attendee lists. Materials range in date from 1968 to 1988.
