Biographical / historical:

The Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) was created in 1996 from the Duke Databank for Cardiovascular Disease (DDCD). Dr. Robert M. Califf was named as the first DCRI director. The DCRI designs and conducts small and large multinational clinical trials.
DCRI's first international trial, and first megatrial, was Project GUSTO (Global Utilization of Streptokinase and tPA for Occluded Coronary Arteries). Starter boxes were shipped to every site that obtained IRB approval to enroll patients in the clinical trial. The starter boxes gave the site coordinators a set of documents and items needed from the enrollment of a patient to reporting the data to one-year-follow-up for survival status. Contents for the box were replenished as needed through computerized monitoring of enrollment/site. This method kept each site supplied with needed study patient-related materials throughout the clinical trial.
The current DCRI Executive Director is Adrian Hernandez, MD, MHS, who took on that role in 2020. Former DCRI Executive Directors are Robert Califf, MD (1996-2006); Robert Harrington, MD (2006-2012); Eric Peterson, MD, MPH (2012-2018); and Lesley Curtis, PhD (Interim, 2018-2020).
