Duke Cancer Institute Records, 1943-2011

The Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center became one of the nation's first cancer centers in December 1971 after the passage of the National Cancer Act. In 1973, the Duke Cancer Center was designated a cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. Types of materials include correspondence, reports, reprinted articles, grant materials, photographs, brochures, meeting agendas, photographic contact sheets, and videotapes. Major themes include the External Scientific Review Committee, the Cancer Center Advisory Committee, Cancer Center support grants and core grants, Oncology Recreation Therapy, the Take-A-Seat Gala and Auction, and the Duke Center for Living. Materials range in date from 1943 to 2011.

William W. Shingleton Papers, 1943-1987

Contains reprinted articles, progress reports, and photographs of William W. Shingleton, the founding director of the Duke Cancer Institute. Reprints include Shingleton's first published scientific article, "Some Etiological Aspects of Hyperthyroidism" (1943), published in "The Journal of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine" and "Significance of Idiopathic Venous Thrombosis and Hidden Cancer" (1956), printed in the Journal of the American Medical Association." Photographs include portraits of Shingleton, Shingleton speaking at a Clinical Pathological Conference, and the walkway to the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Other publications include a brochure "How the Cancer Information Service Can Help You and a protocol "Adjuvant Therapy of Rectal Cancer" (1979). Materials date from 1943 to 1987.
