William J. Donelan was the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Duke University Health System (DUHS) and vice chancellor for health affairs at Duke. This collection contains 3 oral history interviews conducted on November 11, 2003 and May 26, 2004 by Jessica Roseberry and March 10, 2020 by Emily Stewart as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the November 11, 2003 interview, Donelan discusses his role in the administration of the Duke University Health System. In the May 26, 2004 interview, Donelan continues to discuss his role in the administration of Duke University Health System. In the March 10, 2020 interview, Donelan discusses his early life, his educational background, his professional career path at Duke, the business administration side Duke's transformation into a premier academic hospital, his relationship Sabiston, and Sabiston's legacy at Duke.

Biographical / historical:

William J. Donelan, a native of Washington, D.C., earned an undergraduate degree in political science from Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia, and a master of management science degree from Duke University Fuqua School of Business. He joined Duke University Medical Center's administrative team in 1969 and served in a variety of management roles during his tenure, including chief operating officer of Duke University Hospital during the 1980s. With his 1990 appointment as vice chancellor for health affairs, Donelan assumed senior responsibility for overseeing the administrative and financial affairs of the medical center. He assumed his position with the health system when it was formed in 1998.
Donelan served on numerous national and state health-related and professional organizations' boards, including the National Kidney Foundation, Association of American Medical Colleges, and the North Carolina Hospital Association. He also served on the Health Care Systems Governing Council of the American Hospital Association. Donelan's last position at Duke was the executive vice president and chief operating officer for Duke University Health System and vice chancellor for health affairs at Duke University. In this position, Donelan oversaw Duke's operations, guiding efforts to improve the quality, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility of patient care.
