Sue Ellen Clevenger Biswell attended Duke University School of Nursing from 1955 to 1958 after graduating from Clarke County High School in Berryville, Virginia, in 1955. She married Charles Biswell, a fellow Duke University graduate, in the fall of 1958. With him, she moved throughout the country, including Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Orange County; South Carolina; and Charlotte, North Carolina. She had two daughters, Susan and Elizabeth Biswell.
