Walter Lee Thomas Jr., was born on March 9, 1906, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Walter Lee Thomas Sr., and Helen Lair Thomas. He received both his MA (1927) and MD (1931) from the University of Virginia. From 1935 to 1936 Thomas received postgraduate medical training in eleven European countries. He served as a physician and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University for more than thirty years beginning in 1937.
Thomas' numerous professional memberships include the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Southern Medical Association, the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina, the Southern Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, and the Seaboard Medical Society. Thomas was also a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
During World War II, he served on Active Duty with the 65th General Hospital from 1942 to 1945 and in 1949 served a three-month assignment for the Surgeon General in the Far East.
Thomas married Maisie Alice Denholm in 1936. He died on April 18, 1970. - Acquisition information:
