- Louis E. Swanson (1919-2004) was the director of the Medical Center Planning Office from 1960 to 1978, and the director of facilities planning for Duke University Medical Center from 1978 until his retirement in 1984. Louis E. Swanson was born on September 8, 1919 in St. Paul Minnesota. As an undergraduate, Swanson attended St. Paul's Hamline University where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1941. In 1948, he received a certificate in hospital administration from Duke University and later a certificate from Cornell University's Hospital Administrator Development Program in 1960.
In 1949, Swanson became assistant superintendent of Duke University Hospital. He was promoted to co-superintendent in 1952 and assistant administrative director in 1955. Swanson was made director of the Medical Center Planning Office in 1960, where he served for eighteen years. He was then appointed to the position of director of facilities planning and remained in this position until his retirement in 1984. Swanson also held a faculty appointment as associate professor in hospital administration in the Duke Department of Health Administration for thirty-five years. Prior to his retirement, he was made an associate professor emeritus.
Swanson was involved in the planning of several major building projects during his time at Duke. Major projects included the Duke South Main Entrance in 1967, the Pickens Building, the Morris Building, the Eye Center, and Parking Garage #1.
Swanson died on February 28, 2004 in Durham, North Carolina. - Acquisition information:
