Established in 1930, The Department of Surgery was one of the first departments at Duke Hospital and Duke School of Medicine. The collection contains correspondence, reports, photographs, composite photographs, handbooks, invitations, microscope slides, negatives, 35mm projector slides, research notes, research logs, articles, artifacts, reference files, programs, departmental publications, financial records, and digital files documenting the day to day operations of the department. Biographical / historical:

Established in 1930, The Department of Surgery was one of the first departments at Duke Hospital and Duke School of Medicine. Dr. J. Deryl Hart served as the first department chair from 1930 to 1960. Other department chairs include:
