Christian R. H. Raetz (1946-2011) was a former George Barth Geller Professor for Molecular Biology and chair of the Department of Biochemistry at Duke University Medical Center. Biographical / historical:

Christian Rudolf Hubert Raetz was born in 1946 in East Berlin. His parents were industrial chemists. In the early 1950s, Raetz's father was recruited by the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation, and the family moved to Columbus, Ohio. Raetz earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Yale University (1967) and his MD and PhD degrees from Harvard University (1973). After graduation, he worked as a research associate at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1974, he joined the faculty of the biochemistry department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. From 1987 to 1993, Raetz left academia to join Merck Research Laboratories first as executive director of biochemistry and later as executive vice president of research in biochemistry and microbiology.
In 1993, Raetz and became the George Barth Geller Professor and Chair of Biochemistry at Duke University Medical Center. He served as chair until 2007, and remained on the faculty until his passing. His research interests include membrane biochemistry, biosynthesis of lipid A, endotoxin signaling, antibacterial antibiotics, and genomics of lipid diversity.
Raetz joined the Editorial Committee of the "Annual Review of Biochemistry" in 1992, and in 1996, he became an associate editor. He held this position until his death. He was also elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2006.
Raetz died on August 16, 2011.
