Abstract:

Dr. Joseph B. Parker Jr., served in the medical corps of the United States Navy Reserve for four years during World War II. He first came to Duke University medical school to complete his psychiatric education. He went on to serve as an instructor of neuropsychiatry at Duke University from 1948 to 1949 and worked part time in child community clinics in North Carolina. He went on to become an assistant professor and associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Tennessee from 1949 to 1953, where he was the director of the Child Guidance Clinic. Afterwards he served as Associate professor of psychiatry at Duke from 1953 to 1959 and developed a psychiatric service with training and research activities at the new V.A. Hospital. Dr. Parker left Duke in 1959 to serve as professor and chairman of the University of Kentucky's Department of Psychiatry. In 1970, Dr. Parker returned to Duke University Medical Center as a professor of psychiatry and remained in this position until his retirement and serving as professor emeritus.

This collection is dominated by Dr. Parker's correspondence with professional societies, his personal correspondence, and his correspondence at Duke University and the University of Kentucky. It also contains a number of his published papers and other professional reports and notes along with some research material.

The Joseph B. Parker papers consist of correspondence, professional papers and reports, photographs, slides, newspaper clippings, and some personal documents.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Joseph B. Parker Jr., was born on 8 July 1916 in Knox County, Tenn., and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1939 with a bachelor's degree, and from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis in 1941. He performed his internship at Knoxville General Hospital from 1941 to 1942. Dr. Parker served in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps, primarily in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marines, eventually earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander. While in the Navy, he served his residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, D.C. from 1944 to 1945, and later moved to Durham and served his residency in psychiatry at Duke University Hospital from 1946 to 1948. In 1949, he joined Duke's psychiatric staff. Dr. Parker became an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee Medical School from 1949-1952, where he directed the Child Guidance Clinic. In 1953, Dr. Parker became chief of psychiatry at the V.A. Hospital in Durham and associate professor at Duke. In 1959, he became professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. From 1970 until his retirement in the early 1980s he was professor of psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and later became emeritus professor. Dr. Parker was recognized as a Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Parker died in Durham, N.C., on 1 September 2007.
