Contains audiotapes and transcipt of and oral history interview with R. Sanders Williams, dean of the Duke University School of Medicine.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. R. Sanders Williams was born in Athens, Ga. in 1948. He received degrees from Princeton University (B.A.) and Duke University (M.D., 1974). Following a residency at Massachusetts General, Williams returned to Duke for a fellowship in cardiology. From 1980 to 1990, he served on the faculty of the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Williams moved to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1990 as chief of cardiology and there directed the Ryburn Center for Molecular Cardiology. He also helped develop the Center for Biomedical Invention (CBI). He has served as the chair for several committees of the American Heart Association and has functioned as president of the Association of University Cardiologists and served on the Director's Advisory Committee of the National Institutes of Health and the Board of External Advisors to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Williams has published approximately 200 articles in journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Nature. He holds five patents for his work. Dr. Williams has received numerous awards for both research and teaching, including the Duke University School of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2000.
