Biographical / historical:

Charles Peete was born April 30, 1924, in Warrenton, NC. He was a sixth-generation physician, and his father was a general practitioner. When he was in high school, Peete would sometimes drive his father to house calls. He also witnessed the intricacies of medicine at his father's home office. Dr. William Peete, brother to Charles Peete, became a surgeon and also practiced at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Charles Peete attended University of North Carolina for two-and-a-half years; he then attended and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1944. After an internship in medicine at Duke, he began two years of work and training in the US Naval Hospital in Key West, Florida in 1954. In 1956, he returned to Duke and worked as a physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. There Dr. Peete became an active member in the Nick Carter Travel Club, named for the chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, F. Bayard Carter. Dr. Peete was in charge of the outrider services for medical students for several years. He served as a physician at Duke until his retirement in 1994.
