- Biographical / historical:

Dr. Francis H. McCullough, Jr., was born in New Bern, N.C. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, and graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in December 1943 as part of the first accelerated class under the V-12 military program, designed to speed up medical training so that physicians could be sent to war. After his graduation, McCullough completed his internship in New Jersey and went immediately to naval training. He returned to Duke in 1947 as an orthopedic resident and soon was sent to Korea. He remained in military service after the war ended, and was chief of orthopedic surgery at Great Lakes Hospital in Illinois as well as Camp Pendleton in California. He was commanding officer of a naval hospital in Twentynine Palms, Calif. McCullough entered private practice as an orthopedic surgeon and retired in 1987.
