Contains interview tapes and transcript of an oral history interview with Donna Allen Harris, the first African-American to graduate from the Duke University School of Nursing. Harris's experiences integrating the school system in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and the Duke University School of Nursing are the major subjects of this interview.

Biographical / historical:

Donna Allen Harris, RN, BSN, Social Research Assistant II, was the first African-American to graduate from the Duke University School of Nursing. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Duke in 1971 and continued to expand her credentials through advanced coursework at East Carolina University, Stanford University, and the American Nurses Certification Corporation. Mrs. Harris has served at North Carolina Central University, the Department of Social Services, the Durham County Heath Department, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Duke University School of Nursing in various positions such as clinical instructor, public health nurse, school nurse, and social research assistant. As of 2008, she serves as a master trainer for the Arthritis Self-Help Course and the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program as well as a Social Research Assistant II at the Duke University School of Nursing. She has maintained ongoing research support from the National Institute of Nursing Research since 1998 and has focused much of her study on the self management of arthritis and premature infants. She is active in church work and has been honored as a Friend of the NAACP and as a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society of nursing.
