Biographical / historical:

The Occupational and Environmental Safety Office at Duke University ensures that Duke's patient care, research, and teaching environments are in accord with all regulatory requirements, relevant community standards, and institutional resources. This balance is accomplished by identifying hazardous conditions, developing appropriate control measures, implementing controls through specialized training, and monitoring the effectiveness of the controls. The office produces many manuals, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, radioactive materials safety, and contractor safety.
The department is divided into the following divisions: Administration, Biological Safety, Environmental Programs, Ergonomics, Fire Safety, Occupational Hygiene and Safety, and Radiation Safety.
The Biological Safety Division specifically addresses employee safety, training, policies, and other concerns regarding occupational exposure to biological agents such as bloodborne pathogens and tuberculosis. This division is involved in the administration and oversight of occupational safety management for handling biological materials, workplace biological safety audits and policy development, the investigation of reported workplace blood and body fluid exposure data, the review of all experimentation involving biological hazards, and the provision of site-specific training for working with hazardous biological materials. It also monitors hospital-wide compliance with N95 respirator fit-testing, PPD skin testing, and HBV vaccination, and provides support and guidance for the startup, closeout, and relocation of research labs.
