The Occupational and Environmental Safety Office at Duke University ensures that Duke's patient care, research, and teaching environments are in accord with all regulatory requirements, relevant community standards, and institutional resources. This balance is accomplished by identifying hazardous conditions, developing appropriate control measures, implementing controls through specialized training and monitoring the effectiveness of the controls. The office produces many manuals, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, radioactive materials safety, and contractor safety. The department is divided into the following divisions: Administration; Biological Safety; Environmental Programs; Ergonomics; Fire Safety; Occupational Hygiene and Safety; and Radiation Safety.
