Contains correspondence, reports, memoranda, newsletters, committee materials, bulletins, and programs pertaining to the professional activities of E. Croft Long as a professor of medicine and an advisor for Project Med-Aid at Duke University. Materials range in date from 1960 to 1974.

Biographical / historical:

Ernest Croft Long was born in London, England in 1920 to EJ Long and Nancy C. Long. He received a BS in 1953 and a PhD in 1957 from the University of London and was a lecturer of physiology at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School from 1954 to 1956. In 1956, he joined the Duke University School of Medicine as a professor of community health sciences. Long was associate dean of medical student affairs (1965-1967), associate dean of undergraduate medical education (1967-1973), and chair of the Committee on International Studies (1966-1969). He also served as the director of Project Med-Aid, a radio consultative program based at Duke University that used radio communications to assist isolated doctors in other countries.
Following his tenure at Duke, Long was a field staff member with the Rockefeller Foundation (1973-1978) and regional field director for Latin America with Project Hope.
Long's research interests were in international health and respiration mechanics in newborns.
Long is the author of "Health Objectives for the Developing Society; Responsibility of Individual, Physician, and Community" (1965) and "The Development to 1880 of Medical Education in Guatemala" (1966).
Long married Mary Caroline Becker in 1954. Long died on September 2, 2011.
