Biographical / historical:

Alphonse Joseph Langois, PhD, was born on March 6, 1929 in Manchester, New Hampshire, to Adelard and Evelina (Dufresne) Langlois. Following high school, Alphonse Langlois joined the New Hampshire National Guard, serving from 1947 to 1950, then the U.S. Air Force, serving as a surgical technician from 1950 to 1954. After his military service, Langlois received a BA degree in bacteriology from the University of New Hampshire in 1958, a MA in microbiology from Duke University in 1963, and a PhD in microbiology from Duke University in 1966.

Langlois spent his career as part of the Department of Surgery at Duke University Medical Center. He was Research Associate from 1966 to 1973, Assistant Clinical Professor from 1973 to 1980, Associate Medical Research Professor from 1980 to 1990, Medical Research Professor from 1990 to 1995, and Medical Research Professor Emeritus from 1995 until his death. During his career at Duke, Langlois researched cancer and HIV, publishing over 100 articles in academic journals.

Langlois married Marilyn Marsh in 1951. They had six children. Alphonse Langlois died on July 2, 2013 in Durham, North Carolina.
