Biographical / historical:

Glenn Jay Jaffe, MD, a retina specialist with an active basic and clinical research program, is a vitreo-retinal surgeon and professor of ophthalmology at Duke University Eye Center. Jaffe has actively engaged in clinical research for his entire career. He has extensive clinical trials experience and has served as Principal Investigator for more than 15 NEI-sponsored, individual investigator initiated, and industry-sponsored clinical trials. These trials have included interventional trials for AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and uveitis. Jaffe's research interests include conducting research to develop intraocular sustained drug delivery systems, which are small implants that release medication over long time periods, allowing patients to avoid taking toxic medications or receive painful injections. Jaffe is also involved with projects to interpret images from large pharmaceutical company trials, providing information from these studies to the FDA, which the FDA uses to decide whether or not to approve a drug used to treat an eye disease.
Jaffe is also the founder and Director of the OCT Reading Center at Duke, where he manages the business aspects of the center, as well as overseeing and participating in the development of OCT data submission, entry, and analysis methodology. At the Reading Center, Jaffe works closely with the Dr. Cynthia Toth and the staff to develop the OCT Reading Center Manual of Procedures, OCT technician certification protocols, and study procedures. He has published extensively on OCT (along with other clinical research topics), and he has given numerous national and international lectures on OCT and organized/co-directed the "Art of OCT" course held in Durham, North Carolina, in May 2003. This course provided state-of-the-art information on OCT theory and practical applications to a large audience of physicians and technicians/imagers from around the U.S. and Canada.
Jaffe received his medical degree at the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine in 1987. He did his residency in Vitreoretinal Disease at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1987 to 1989, and he is board certified through the American Board of Ophthalmology. Jaffe has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants throughout his career.
