Leslie Hohman was born in Columbia, Ohio, in 1891 to Lee and Hennie Hohman. He received degrees from University of Missouri (AB, 1912) and Johns Hopkins University, (MD, 1917). He also attended graduate school at the University of Vienna in 1924. Hohman's psychiatric training and residency was completed at the Phipps Clinic of Johns Hopkins University Hospital (1917-1922). Following his formal training, Hohman served at Johns Hopkins Medical School as an instructor in psychiatry (1920-1922), associate in psychiatry (1922-1943), and assistant professor (1943-1946).
Hohman joined Duke University in 1946 as a professor of psychiatry in the School of Medicine. Hohman also held the position of director of the Child Guidance Clinic in Durham, North Carolina, from 1946 to 1953. He retired from the department in 1960 and served as professor emeritus. Throughout his career, he also maintained time in private practice in psychiatry and acted as consultant to the Department of Psychiatry, Veterans Administration, United States Army, and United States Navy. He served as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during WWI (1917-1919) and Commander, M.C. in the U.S. Navy during WWII (1943-1946).
Hohman was a member and past president of the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and the American Psychopathological Association. He was also a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American Neurological Association, North Carolina Medical Association, Southern Medical Associations, and Southern Psychiatric Association. He authored "As the Twig Is Bent" (1939) and contributed to "Current Diagnosis: a Biennial Volume of Clinical Diagnostic Methods and Evaluations."
Hohman died on January 28, 1972 in Baltimore, Maryland. - Acquisition information:
