Scope and content:

Contains the personal and professional papers of William J. A. DeMaria(1923-1990), a professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Community Health Sciences, as well as an associate director for medical education at Duke University Medical Center. He was the first director of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in 1976. Types of material include news clippings, reports, ingoing and outgoing correspondence, articles, papers, and handwritten notes pertaining to various topics regarding pediatrics and public health at Duke University Medical Center and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, including changes in the health profession, the cost of medical services, community health, the Education and Screening for Employees (EASE) program, employee and worksite health, and prospective medicine in the central nervous system; the excessoses (conditions of indulgence); the gastrointestinal tract; the genitourinary tract; the respiratory tract, immunology, and allergy; and the unwanted child syndrome. Materials range in date from 1951 to 1984.

Biographical / historical:

William J. A. DeMaria was born in Westpoint, Connecticut, on May 15, 1923. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut in 1944 and his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1948. After being a U.S. Public Health Service Fellow from 1948 to 1949, DeMaria held numerous positions in the Department of Pediatrics at Duke, including intern, assistant resident, resident, instructor, associate, assistant professor, and professor. In 1963, DeMaria became a professor of preventative medicine, a title that changed to professor of community health sciences when the Department of Community Health Sciences formed in 1966. He also became the chief of the Division of Family Health. In 1967, he became the assistant dean of continuing education, and later was named the director of the North Carolina Regional Medical Program Education and Training Division. He became the associate director for medical education in 1972, was elected chairman of the board of the National Driving Center in 1975, and became the first medical director at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in 1976.
DeMaria was a member of numerous professional societies, including Alpha Omega Alpha, Sigma Xi, Society of Pediatric Research, North Carolina Pediatric Society, Southern Society for Pediatric Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Durham-Orange County Medical Society, North Carolina State Medical Society, American Medical Association, and American Society of Nephrology.
DeMaria was married to Mary Katherine DeMaria. He died September 15, 1990, at the age of 67.
