The City of Medicine, a part of Durham Health Partners, emerged in 1981 through the Chamber of Commerce as Durham matured from textiles and tobacco to medicine and biotechnology. Durham Health Partners, founded in 1999, promotes effective solutions that remove barriers to improved community health. The City of Medicine, USA initially served to promote Durham's new image and celebrate individuals for their achievements in medicine and biotechnology. The City of Medicine, USA later expanded to provide scholarships to encourage Durham students to pursue higher education in these areas. These excellent programs continue to showcase and develop Durham.
Today the City of Medicine, USA has an international committee of healthcare and medical science leaders representing prestigious institutions who annually select and honor international, distinguished scientists. Honoring and supporting medical science achievement and education, The City of Medicine, USA celebrates those working internationally, nationally, and locally to improve human health and recognizes Durham's rich healthcare resources.
Partnerships with business and healthcare leaders in Durham and across the country play a key role in its success. The City of Medicine, USA has three distinct components: City of Medicine, USA Awards Program; City of Medicine, USA High School Scholarships; and City of Medicine, USA Ambassador Program. Since 1988, The City of Medicine, USA Awards program has recognized distinguished medical and health professionals and organizations for exemplary achievements in medicine, health and biomedical sciences annually at the fall awards ceremony. A committee of two dozen leaders in medical and health fields selects recipients. To date, the program has granted 63 awards to healthcare leaders, ten of whom have also received the Nobel Prize. The City of Medicine, USA High School Awards program awards scholarships to Durham high school seniors planning careers in healthcare and related fields. The program works to encourage Durham youth to explore and pursue fields that will impact health. Students from all the local high schools are invited to participate in the competitive process. Over the years, many students have been honored and awarded with more than $36,000 in scholarships. - Acquisition information:
