Jasper Lamar Callaway was born on 5 April 1911. An Alabama native, Jasper Lamar Callaway entered the Duke University School of Medicine in 1931 and graduated in 1933. Handpicked by Dr. Frederic Hanes to be Duke's first dermatologist, he joined the School of Medicine faculty in 1937 after being a fellow in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania and being a faculty member at the University of Alabama. At the time, he was the only member of the Division of Dermatology. In 1946, "Dr. Cal" became chief of the division, a position he held until 1975. He worked and wrote about illnesses including syphilis, Gilchrist's Disease, keratosis follicularis, psoriasis, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, acne, and shingles. In 1982, a member of Duke's Public Relations Department stated that Callaway had "seen and helped bring about virtually every advance in skin disease diagnosis and treatment since dermatology took off as a subspecialty during World War II." Callaway received numerous honors for his service to Duke University and the dermatological field. In 1967, he was named James B. Duke Professor of Dermatology in recognition of his unique contribution to Duke University and dermatology. In 1978, the School of Medicine created the J. Lamar Callaway Chair of Dermatology. In 1972, the American Academy of dermatology awarded Callaway its Gold Medal, only the eighth awarded since the founding of the Academy in 1938. In 1982, he received the Stephen Rothman Award of the Society for Investigative Dermatology. Callaway's influence extended well beyond Duke, as he gained recognition as one of the most prominent dermatologists in the country. He served as chairman of the Southern Medical Association's Section on Dermatology; president of the American Association of Professors of Dermatology; president of the Society for Investigative Dermatology; president of the American Board of Dermatology; president of the American Academy of Dermatology; president of the American Dermatological Association; chairman of the American Medical Association's Section on Dermatology; and president of the Southeastern Dermatological Association. He also served on the editorial boards for The Archives of Dermatology and Syphilology, Medicine, The Journal of Investigative Dermatology, and Southern Medicine and Surgery, and was a national consultant to surgeon generals, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Air Force. In addition, he authored or co-authored more than 160 scholarly publications. Callaway died on 19 January 1993.
