The Duke University Medical Center Board of Visitors was formed in the early 1960s with the support of Dr. Barnes Woodhall. It was comprised of a combination of experts in the medical field and university trustees, with the intention that the trustees would have the experience and background necessary to defend the Medical Center's interests within the general university agenda. The Board of Visitors provides advice and support to the deans and senior faculty of Duke University Medical Center. They have been involved in the planning of numerous large scale Medical Center projects, including the construction of Duke Hospital North, which opened in 1980.
