The Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honorary Medical Fraternity was organized at the College of Medicine, University of Illinois on August 25, 1902. The name of the society changed to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1934. The society's motto is "Be worthy to serve the suffering." The society's primary goal is to recognize and perpetuate excellence in the medical profession.
The Duke University AOA chapter was installed on April 29, 1931 with three members: Jay M. Arena, George W. Heinitsh, and John Fletcher Lovejoy. All were members of the 1932 class of the School of Medicine. The chapter has remained continually active at Duke, with new members from the School of Medicine and hospital initiated each spring. Chapter members elect students for membership during their junior and senior years based on academic performance and personal qualities. The chapter also elects house staff, faculty, and alumni whose academic and personal qualities demonstrate excellence in the profession.
During the 1980s, the AOA sponsored two visiting professors per year, funded by the national AOA organization, to visit Duke's campus, go on clinicals or rounds with faculty, and hold a lecture pertaining to the medical field.
While he worked at Duke University, Dr. Edward Halperin served as councilor for the Duke Chapter of AOA. Previous councilors also include James F. Glenn and Edward S. Orgain. - Acquisition information:
