Contains a scrapbook made by Frederick Vernon Altvater, superintendent of Duke Hospital from 1933 to 1946. The scrapbook contains news clippings, photographs, greeting cards from friends of the Alvater family. Materials also include loose articles, clippings, correspondence, and photographs. Materials date from circa 1924 to 1975.

Biographical / historical:

Frederick Vernon Altvater was born in Central City, Colorado, in 1907 to Fritz and Mary Altvater. He received an AB degree in 1930 and a MA degree in 1932 in economics from Duke University. In 1933, he became superintendent of Duke Hospital. Following a move to Denver, Colorado, in 1946, he served as a consultant to the Dean of the Duke School of Medicine.
He married Margaret Ann Glass in 1929 and they had three daughters. Altvater died in 1971.
