Abstract:
Dr. John L. Weinerth, MD, Professor Emeritus of Surgery, came to Duke for his Internship and Residency. After completing his training, he remained at Duke for the rest of his career with appointments in the Departments of Urology and Surgery where he specialized in urology, kidney preservation, and kidney transplantation. He is also known for his work in graduate medical education. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on July 28, 2021 by Taylor Patterson as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the interview, Weinerth discusses his background; education; how he came to Duke for his medical training; his time in the Navy where he helped build a tissue bank on the West Coast; what was like to be a resident in the seventies; memories of Sabiston as his teacher, colleague, and friend; Sabiston's principles, high expectations, dress code, and desire to always do better; and how Sabiston helped him in his career by making him one of the first of two Urology Transplant Fellows.

In the July 28, 2021 interview, Weinerth discusses his background; education; how he came to Duke for his medical training; his time in the Navy where he helped build a tissue bank on the West Coast; what was like to be a resident in the seventies; memories of Sabiston as his teacher, colleague, and friend; Sabiston's principles, high expectations, dress code, and desire to always do better; and how Sabiston helped him in his career by making him one of the first of two Urology Transplant Fellows.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. John Louis Weinerth, MD, grew up in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. In high school, he wrestled, played football, and ran track. After graduating from high school, he attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. While in college, Weinerth took up boxing, but his boxing career ended when his father told him he did not send him to college to get his brains beat out. He graduated from Bucknell University with a degree in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Math. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1967. He then came to Duke for his Internship and Residency where he worked under both Dr. David C. Sabiston (Surgery) and Dr. James F. Glenn (Urology). From 1968 to 1970, Weinerth joined the Navy where he helped build a tissue bank on the West Coast. During this time, he spent one year in Bethesda, Maryland, and another year in San Diego, California. Upon completion of his time in the Navy, Weinerth came back to Duke to complete his training.

Upon completion of his training, Weinerth stayed at Duke where he remained for the rest of his career specializing in urology, kidney preservation, and kidney transplantation. He is also known for his work in graduate medical education. While at Duke he held the following appointments: Associate Professor of Urology with tenure in the Department of Surgery, Surgery, Section of Surgical Disciplines (1980-1992); Associate Professor of Surgery, Surgery, Section of Surgical Disciplines (1991-1992); Professor of Surgery, Surgery, Section of Surgical Disciplines (1994-2007); Professor of Surgery, Surgery, Urology, Surgery (1992-2013). He retired in 2014 and became Professor Emeritus of Surgery.

Weinerth received the Duke University Distinguished Faculty Award (2001) and the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (2007).

Weinerth is married to his wife, Peggy, a retired Duke urology nurse. The couple practiced together for a number of years. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Weinerth enjoys to hunt, fish, read, and do small woodworking projects.
