Dr. John Palmer Grant, MD, is a Professor of Surgery at Duke whose research interests lie in issues surrounding the surgical management of obesity. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on July 12, 1994 by Dr. James Gifford. In this interview, which is included in the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project, Grant discusses the Surgical Nutrition Research Laboratory in the Department of Surgery, his background, and Dr. David Sabiston's reputation and the Department of Surgery at Duke.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. John Palmer Grant, MD, received his medical training from the University of Chicago (1969). He joined Duke in 1969 as a Resident. While at Duke his appointments and affiliations have included Chief of Surgery at VAMC (1984-1989), Associate Professor of Surgery (1984-1994), Professor of Surgery in the Clinical Sciences Departments (1994-2011), and Professor of Surgery in Minimally Invasive Surgery (2011-present). He also was the Director of the Surgical Nutrition Research Laboratory in the Department of Surgery at Duke.

His research interests lie in issues surrounding the surgical management of obesity. Of particular interest are determination of preoperative parameters which might be associated with postoperative outcomes, metabolic and endocrine changes that occur with marked weight loss, the impact of support groups on patient adaptation, and the psycho-social changes induced by surgery.
