E. Harvey Estes Jr. Oral History Interviews, circa 1990-2007

Abstract Or Scope
Dr. E. Harvey Estes Jr., MD, was a Durham Veterans Administration Hospital physician and administrator, and chair of the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. This collection contains 4 oral history interviews conducted at separate times. Interviews were conducted in 1990, as part of an oral history project conducted by the Physician Assistant (PA) History Education Division within the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of Duke's PA program; November 30, 1994 by Natalie Holt; April 28, 2004 by Jessica Roseberry; and June 25, 2007 by Jessica Roseberry. In the 1990 interview, Estes discusses his career, his experiences as a faculty member affiliated with the Duke University PA Program, and the development of PA programs in the United States. In the 1994 interview, Estes discusses the development of the PA profession. In the 2004 interview, Estes discusses the history of the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke. He also discusses the department's relationship with Watts Hospital, Durham Regional Hospital (now Duke Regional Hospital), and the Duke University PA Program. In the 2007 interview, Estes discusses his experiences with female physicians, employees, and volunteers at Duke University Medical Center, primarily focusing on the Department of Medicine and the Department of Community and Family Medicine. The Medical Education for National Defense (MEND) Committee was a cooperative between the United States Department of Defense and select medical schools established by the Joint American Medical Association in 1952 and joined by Duke in 1956. The goal of this committee was to integrate the special problems of military and disaster medicine into the existing curricula of each participating medical university. Duke University Fallout Preparedness Committee Records, 1961-1963

Abstract Or Scope
On July 11, 1961, Dean Barnes Woodhall commissioned the Fallout Preparedness Committee to study the issue of fallout protection for the Duke Medical Center in case of a future nuclear attack. The committee was created as a response to the escalating tensions with the Soviet Union in Berlin and the construction of the Berlin Wall. In September 1961, Deryl Hart, President of Duke University, expanded the committee and tasked it with planning a fallout shelter program for the Duke University Community.. Norman M. Rich Oral History Interview, May 21, 2019

Abstract Or Scope
Retired U.S. Army Colonel, Dr. Norman M. Rich, MD, a vascular surgeon, refined vascular surgical techniques as a young surgeon in Vietnam. His expertise and techniques saved many soldiers from limb amputation or death, which led him to be known as the surgeon who heralded a new age in vascular injury management, with particular focus on venous reconstruction. After Vietnam, Rich went on to a long academic career in the field of vascular surgery. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on May 21, 2019 by Dr. Justin Barr as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the interview, Rich discusses his early life in a copper mining town in Arizona; early interest in the repair of blood vessels; education; decision to become a surgeon; military service as a surgeon in Vietnam and later running the vascular service at Walter Reed and running the vascular fellowship program; Rich and Sabiston's friendship and warm working relationship; Rich's career in medicine after retiring from active duty; attending conferences, domestic and international, with Sabiston; and Rich's commitment to teamwork.

This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on June 24, 2019 by Emily Stewart as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the interview, Jaffe discusses, as part of the recorded interview, how he helped locate the grave of Dr. William Stewart Halsted, a role model for Dr. Sabiston, when Sabiston was a visiting professor at the medical school at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. There are additional notes about 2 Sabiston stories made during a phone conversation with Jaffe that were not recorded about how Jaffe met Sabiston and Sabiston's niece only calling him "Dr. Sabiston" and not "Uncle Dave".

Dr. Walter J. Pories, MD, Professor of Surgery, Biochemistry and Kinesiology at East Carolina University is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and received his MD with Honor at the University of Rochester where he also completed his surgical training in general and cardio-thoracic surgery. He served on the faculties of the University of Rochester, Case Western Reserve and East Carolina University where he served as the founding Chairman of Surgery for 19 years. He is currently the Director of the Bariatric Surgery Research Group. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on July 30, 2020 by Taylor Patterson as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. Contains various materials from the Division of Plastic, Maxillofacial, and Oral Surgery. Includes Dr. Nicholas Georgiade's patient slides, patent materials for his work on cleft palates, and correspondence, much of which refers to his work on cleft palates. A small amount of correspondence belonging to Dr. Jeffrey Marcus. Photographs given to the Division by Dr. Maria Matton-van Leuven, a former research associate documenting Dr. Guido Matton and her time at Duke. A small amount of administrative records from the Division such as printed materials, meeting materials, the Cleft Palate Trust Fund, Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Team history, a departmental history, alumni events, and the Flap Dissection Course, as well as digital files documenting the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Team's involvement in Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month in Durham, North Carolina. Also contains the Video Atlas of Microsurgical Composite Tissue Transplantation video series by Dr Donald Serafin, former Chief of the Division of Plastic, Maxillofacial, and Oral Surgery.
