              Tracy K. Gosselin Oral History Interview, 2021

              Dr. Tracy K. Gosselin, PhD, MSN, joined Duke University Hospital in 1993 as a Staff Nurse for Inpatient Oncology. A Massachusetts native and graduate of Northeastern University's College of Nursing's five year co-operative education program, she developed an interest in oncology nursing while in nursing school, which included an assignment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where she became close to patients undergoing treatment. When she left Duke, in 2021, for a leadership position at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, she was the Chief Nursing & Patient Care Services Officer at Duke University Hospital; a wide-ranging job encompassing nursing practice, education, standards, and accreditation, as well as the implementation of patient care practices.                   Marjorie Goff (1925-2017) was one of the first students in Duke University School of Nursing's advanced degree program and received her BSN in 1948. She later served as a Staff Nurse and Assistant in Nursing for Duke Hospital and as an Assistant Instructor in Nursing Arts at Duke University School of Nursing beginning in 1952. After leaving Duke, Goff taught at UNC Greensboro and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, served as a board member of the American Nurses Association and Director of the Northwest Area Health Education Center (NWAHEC), and founded the nursing school at what is now Guilford Technical Community College. This collection contains uniform materials from Goff's time as a student at the School of Nursing. Types of materials include a nursing graduate uniform with long sleeves and RN Cufflinks.                       Julieta (Julia) Giner Oral History Interview, 2024

                      Julieta (Julia) Giner, a nurse, was born in Bonn, Germany, to a German mother and a Spanish father. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was an infant. Being from an immigrant family, Giner understood that life can be challenging, and this understanding motivated her to work against the unfair stigma against HIV/AIDS patients. When one of her good friends became gravely ill because of AIDS in 1989, Giner knew she wanted to be involved in the development of treatment for HIV/AIDS. Giner started working at Duke Hospital in 1993, initially as a floor nurse in the general medicine. At the time, some of the patients in her ward had opportunistic infections due to AIDS, but wanting to be more closely involved in HIV/AIDS work, she spoke to Dr. John A. Bartlett, the physician running the public care clinic for HIV/AIDS patients. In 1996, Bartlett invited her to apply to become a clinical research nurse in that adult infectious disease clinic, where she worked until 2009. From 2005 to 2009, she worked with Bartlett in Moshi, Tanzania, at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. When she returned to Durham, North Carolina, she worked in a general pediatric infectious disease clinic, where she was still able to see HIV/AIDS patients until she retired in 2020. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on February 5, 2024 by Anthony Zhao as part of the Bass Connections Agents of Change Oral History Project. In the interview, Giner discusses her early friendships within the LGBTQ community; taking care of a good friend with AIDS; her work taking care of HIV/AIDS patients at Duke Hospital; her extensive involvement with the community advisory board; her successes and failures with health education about HIV in Durham, North Carolina; and the unique bond within the clinic staff.                               Mary Ann Fuchs Oral History Interview, 2022

                              Dr. Mary Ann Fuchs, DNP, RN, stepped down as Vice President of Patient Care and System Chief Nurse Executive for Duke University Health System, and the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs for Duke University School of Nursing in 2022. During her 2 decades as a chief nursing leader for the Duke University Health System, Fuchs maintained and expanded Duke's reputation as a site for excellence in clinical care, patient experience, education, and research. Notably, she led successful efforts to achieve magnet designation for the health system from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Among her many contributions to the field, she acts as Region 3 Director for the American Organization of Nurse Executives Board of Directors and serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association. Fuchs was made a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2011. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on October 31, 2022 by Josephine McRobbie.                                 Dr. Frush talks about what she has done so far in her career. Dr. Frush started as a nurse, which she was for a year, but quickly went into medical school at Duke to become a pediatrician. Her desire to have a family influenced her decision to become a nurse, but then when a family wasn't in the near future she decided to become a doctor. She now has a family and medical degree, without the conflicts she expected. She also talks about how nurses and doctors must work as a team to ensure patient safety.

                                    Dr. Howard C. Filston, MD, Professor Emeritus of Pediatric Surgery at University of Tennessee Medical Center Knoxville, received his medical training from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He worked at Duke as a Professor and founding Chief of Pediatric Surgery from 1976 to 1990. He left Duke in 1990 to join the faculty at University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville, where he was Professor of Pediatric Surgery, Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Trauma, and Vice Chair/Education Coordinator in the Department of Surgery until his retirement in 2000.                                                 Margery Farmer (1937-2014) moved to Durham to attend Duke University in 1955, where she studied as an Angier B. Duke Scholar. From Duke, she received her Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts in Teaching, and she was eventually recognized with the Duke University Medical Center's Medical Dame certificate for the help she gave her husband, Dr. Joseph C. Farmer, Jr., throughout his medical education. She went on to work professionally in both the public and mental health fields. This collection contains the Medical Certificate Farmer was awarded by Duke University School of Medicine Dean Barnes Woodhall. Materials are from 1962.
