Nancy C. Andrews Lab Notebooks, 1998-2016

Nancy C. Andrews, MD, PhD, became dean of the Duke University School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in October 2007. She has received numerous awards and prizes for research and mentoring. Her laboratory research centers on iron homestasis and mouse models of human diseases. The bulk of this collection contains laboratory notebooks, as well as 5 external hard drives with digital files from the external backup drives of Jackie Lim, Wenjing Xu, and Pavle Matak, researchers in Andrews' lab. The materials in this collection date from 1998 to 2016.

    Dr. Kathryn M. Andolsek is Professor in Family Medicine and Community Health; Assistant Dean, Premedical Education in the School of Medicine; and Senior Fellow in the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. Her career focus is on interprofessional medical education and collaboration in community and population health.     During the interview Andolsek discusses her childhood, growing up in a Chisholm, Minnesota, as well as living in Washington, DC; her education; living in an immigrant community in Chisholm; her father's experience in a Slovenian immigrant family and his work with Congressman John Blatnik; activist influences; applying to undergraduate and medical school at Northwestern and the lack of advising she received; her education experience as a woman; the emphasis on service in girls' Catholic high schools; experiences as a woman in medical school and coping with sexism; encountering racism at Duke during her residency; the merging of Lincoln and Watts Hospitals; diverse peers at Duke; poor attitudes towards family medicine; early involvement with community health in Chicago; her path back to Duke and residency teaching; work with AIDS patients and care for low income patients; community health work in Durham, North Carolina, with nutrition and dentistry; using the recruitment of underrepresented minorities as a performance metric for medical school and the importance of data; using the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program to increase diversity and learning to support students throughout the program; work in obstetrics; students' advocacy for parental leave; learning to accept baby steps towards change; issues with funding; providing quality education to residents; measuring Duke's success through Durham community health outcomes; diversity training and the importance of diversity in teams; GME funding and the rewards of seeing student success; increasing diversity in Duke Health leadership; the value of pathway programs; racial justice advocacy as a white woman; the benefits of family medicine for work in a variety of fields; work involving addiction; learning to persuade and negotiate to lead to changes; and the benefit of diversity in health education in improving patient care.

      Tasha Allen Oral History Interview, 2022

      Tasha Allen, RN, has a passion for primary prevention and education. She is currently a public health nurse and case manager for high-risk pregnancies with the Durham County Department of Public Health (DCDoPH). Allen has worked in collaboration with Duke midwives in a clinical setting since 2004. In 2004, Allen was one of the first DCDoPH nurses to facilitate Centering Pregnancy groups with Duke Midwifery Service at Lincoln Community Health Center, continuing in this role until 2010. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on November 18, 2022 by Josephine McRobbie as part of the Duke Midwifery Service and Durham Maternal Health Oral History Project, which was funded by The Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation Endowment Fund.       During the interview, Allen discusses her early life as the child of a father in the Air Force; her education; early work as a Registered Nurse in pediatrics and as a school nurse; introduction to OB nursing at the Durham County Department of Public Health's Lincoln Community Health Center; the midwifery model of care; the Centering Pregnancy modality; public health nursing; developing a roadmap of resources; the Baby Love Program, now known as Maternal Support Services, which offers services to Medicaid eligible pregnant and postpartum clients; her passion for identifying resources and barriers to service; and the challenges of providing care to under-resourced communities. In this interview, Allen recalls a Centering activity where partners or other support people helped to paint a picture on the pregnant client's belly, describing expressive belly paintings that incorporated "big ol' UNC basketball logos" or "flowers and ballet slippers", and notes how this activity helped to bond parents to their upcoming arrivals.         Irving E. Alexander Papers, 1940-2006

        Irving E. Alexander (1922-2007) was a clinical psychologist and professor in Duke University's Department of Psychology and Neuroscience for 45 years. He served as department chair, taught and counseled undergraduates, trained clinicians, treated patients, served on Duke's Academic Council, was a consulting psychologist at the Durham VA Hospital and in the Halifax County (North Carolina.) school system, and was a consultant to programs for gifted children including the Presidential Scholars program. Types of materials include reading lists, notes, lectures, outlines, clippings, articles, slides, photographs, negatives, programs, correspondence, dream journals, agendas, schedules, membership lists, speeches, meeting minutes, and grant proposals.
