Abstract Or Scope
The Duke Surgical Instrument Shop was founded in 1949 and housed in the basement of the former William Bell Research Building. George W. Newton was the first shop manager, followed by Tom Orr and William Barber. In 1997, the Surgical Instrument Shop's administration was transferred from the Department of Surgery to the Department of Engineering and Maintenance Operations. The North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program began in 1972 to establish statewide community training for health professionals and to reverse a trend toward shortages and uneven distribution of primary care physicians in the state's rural areas. Contains correspondence, reports, minutes, transcripts, newspaper articles, budgets, informational directories, and directories pertaining to the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers Program and the Duke-Fayetteville Area Education Center (now the Southern Region). North Carolina Cerebral Palsy Hospital Records, 1945-1979

Abstract Or Scope
The North Carolina Cerebral Palsy Hospital provided treatment and educational opportunities for children with cerebral palsy under the age of 21. The hospital offered in-patient, out-patient and clinic services on a sliding-fee scale. This collection contains a football game program for the "Twenty-Fourth Annual Cerebral Palsy Football Classic: Carolina vs. Duke," held on October 30 1976, and North Carolina Cerebral Palsy Hospital Board of Directors minutes which cover annual reports, staffing appointments, and quarterly meetings. The North Carolina League of Nursing Education, working with the support of the North Carolina State Nurses' Association, had two main goals: to create a statewide nursing curriculum and to expand the professional nursing association structure. These two organizations guided the professional advancement of North Carolina's nurses. This collection includes North Carolina League of Nursing Education Board of Directors minutes, committee lists, committee and membership letters, member lists, and correspondence. Theodore N. Pappas Oral History Interviews, 1994-1995, 2021

Abstract Or Scope
Dr. Theodore N. Papas, MD (1955- ), holds the Duke Surgical Innovation Distinguished Professorship and is a Professor of Surgery and Vice Dean of Medical Affairs at Duke University. After his surgical training, Pappas joined the Department of Surgery faculty in 1988 where he has remained throughout his career. This collection contains 3 oral history interviews conducted on May 12, 1994 and December 11, 1995 by Dr. James F. Gifford and May 20, 2021 by Dr. Konstantinos Economopoulos as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the 1994 interview, Pappas discusses how he came to be interested in gastrointestinal disease, his surgical training, how he came to Duke, his research, his work at the Gastro-Intestinal Laboratory, the future of the laboratory, and laparoscopic surgery. In the 1995 interview, Pappas discusses the role of the VA Hospital within the Department of Surgery, how Duke residents are trained at the VA Hospital, surgery at the VA Hospital, impact of managed care at the VA Hospital, how work at the VA Hospital will impact the careers of residents, VA patient population, and the emphasis on gastrointestinal research. In the 2021 interview, Pappas discusses his surgical training; how he came to Duke and the details of being hired by Sabiston, including being only the second non-Duke trained person hired by Sabiston in 15 years; Sabiston's incredible memory and how he used it as a recruiting tool among Duke medical students; Sabiston's calculated social interactions; the annual Sabiston Christmas party; observations of how Sabiston interacted with residents and how he ran the Department of Surgery; changes in the Department of Surgery after Sabiston retired; and other memories of Sabiston.

Joseph B. Parker Papers, 1941-2006

Abstract Or Scope
Dr. Joseph B. Parker Jr., served in the medical corps of the United States Navy Reserve for four years during World War II. He first came to Duke University medical school to complete his psychiatric education. He went on to serve as an instructor of neuropsychiatry at Duke University from 1948 to 1949 and worked part time in child community clinics in North Carolina. He went on to become an assistant professor and associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Tennessee from 1949 to 1953, where he was the director of the Child Guidance Clinic. Afterwards he served as Associate professor of psychiatry at Duke from 1953 to 1959 and developed a psychiatric service with training and research activities at the new V.A. Hospital. Dr. Parker left Duke in 1959 to serve as professor and chairman of the University of Kentucky's Department of Psychiatry. In 1970, Dr. Parker returned to Duke University Medical Center as a professor of psychiatry and remained in this position until his retirement and serving as professor emeritus.

Mary Jane Byrd Penland Nursing Memorabilia, 1940-1942

Mary Jane Byrd Penland (1924-1991) was one of the first students to enter the advanced degree program at Duke University's School of Nursing. She received her BS in Nursing Education in 1945. Penland worked as registered nurse at several hospitals, including the University of Chicago Clinics and the Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. She also served as an instructor of nursing and assistant administrator of nursing at the Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia from 1962 until her retirement in 1977. This collection contains materials from Penland's time as a student at Duke University School of Nursing.
