Contains the personal and professional papers of Charles W. Shilling (1901-1994), a physician, a leader in the field of undersea and hyperbaric medicine, research, education, and former Captain of the Medical Corps with the United States Navy. Hans Lowenbach Papers, 1937-1951

Abstract Or Scope

Hans Lowenbach (1905-1983) joined the Duke Medical faculty in 1940, serving as a professor of neurology (1940-1963) and chair of the Department of Psychiatry (1951-1953). From 1949 to 1951, Lowenbach served in the U.S. Army at the 98th General hospital in Munich. He was later the commanding officer of the 3274th U.S. Army hospital reserve and retired in 1965 with the rank of Colonel. Types of materials include research, article drafts, reports, correspondence, photographs, clippings, diagrams, charts, grant materials, notebooks, and notes. The primary subjects are electroshock therapy, neuropsychiatry, and electroencephalography. Materials range in date from 1937 to 1951.

The Duke University Medical Center Archives (DUMCA) plays a role in preserving and providing access to the legal, administrative, and historical records of the Medical Center and Health System administrative offices, department chairs and chiefs, and faculty. Materials in this collection include documentation of Elon Clark's work to inventory historical materials at Duke University Medical Center, correspondence from former archivist Dr. James (Jim) Gifford, documents pertaining to DUMCA's move to the Christian Avenue warehouse, papers pertaining to projects and exhibits completed after DUMCA became part of the Duke University Medical Center Library, and issues of the now defunct DUMCA newsletter. Materials range in date from 1967 to 2016.

65th General Hospital Collection, 1917-2002

Abstract Or Scope

Contains personal papers, records, and memorabilia of the United States Army 65th General Hospital, a United States Army Medical Corps unit staffed by Duke University Medical Center alumni in England during World War II. The unit distinguished itself as a center for both specialized treatment and the immediate care of combat casualties. Following the war, physician of the 65th, Leo Alexander, acted as a consultant to prosecutors in the Nuremberg Trials. Types of materials include official reports, newsletters, patient records, memorabilia, oral histories, photographs, artifacts, audiovisual materials, investigative notes, and short writings. Dr. Worthington "Sandy" G. Schenk III, MD, is a Professor of Surgery at University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine and a surgeon with UVA Health. He completed his medical school and his General Surgery Residency and Trauma Research Fellowship at Duke. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on April 17, 2021 by Dr. Justin Barr as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the interview, Schenk discusses his early life, education, why he decided to join the medical profession, how he came to Duke for his residency and fellowship, Sabiston's teaching style, his research interests, his memories of Sabiston, and recollections of the people he worked with at Duke during his residency and fellowship.
