After service in the United States Air Force, Frank Davis pursued a BS in electrical engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. He then worked at IBM and received a MS in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Davis co-founded the Durham Striders Youth Association (DSYA) in 1977 with Herman Graham and Ralph Bullock. Dr. Brenda Armstrong became involved with the DSYA, meeting Davis through her godfather, Russell Blunt. Armstrong, Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Dean of Admissions for the Duke University School of Medicine, and, among other roles, Vice President of the DSYA, and Davis, Co-Founder of the DSYA, worked together for 37 years. Kathryn Ann Decker graduated from the Duke University School of Nursing in 1943. Prior to her graduation, Decker joined the Duke Student Reserve for the American Red Cross in 1942 and also became one of the first members of Santa Filomena, a senior women's nursing honor society at Duke University, in 1943. Dr. Susan C. Dees, MD (1909-2001), founder and Division Chair of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology (1948-1974), was one of the first female faculty physicians at Duke and the first female to achieve the rank of full Professor in the Duke Medical Center. Dr. John E. Dees, MD (1910-1993), a urologist, was a Professor of Urology at Duke, the second member of the Urology Faculty at Duke, and was known as a master surgeon and surgical innovator. The annual student-faculty show is an entirely student-run production that offers a comedic view of the experiences of a medical student at Duke, usually parodying a popular musical or movie. Duke University School of Medicine faculty wives created the Duke Medical Faculty Wives to raise money for medical student scholarships. The idea to create the group and run a thrift shop as the primary way of fundraising for medical scholarships was proposed by Ethel Wyngaarten. In 1968, by-laws were established, creating the Nearly New Shoppe; Wyngaarten was the chair and Martha Wadsworth was elected president. Duke Med Interfaith (DMI) was founded after a student recognized the need for a safe space for students to meditate or pray while in medical school. DMI was recognized in January 2017 by the School of Medicine and the Graduate Professional School Council as an affinity group. The group saw a need for spaces, conversations, and education around spirituality as it pertains to health care, including understanding religious traditions of colleagues, as well as patients under their care. Membership is open to all graduate and professional schools at Duke. DMI primarily hosts two types of events: social and educational. The Davison Club, chartered in 1969 and named after Wilburt Cornell Davison, the first dean of the Duke University School of Medicine, is a group of medical alumni and friends who each contribute $1,000 or more annually in unrestricted support to Duke University Medical Center and the School of Medicine. Davison Club members have provided more than 18 million dollars for scholarships, fellowships, educational resources, research, and patient care initiatives. The Davison Club is part of the Medical Center Office of Development and Alumni Affairs. This collection contains materials that document the founding of the Davison Club, including "The Davison Club Report #1," a list of charter members, and a certificate of charter members.
