Thomas M. Bashore Oral History Interviews, October 12 and 16, 2020

Abstract Or Scope
Dr. Thomas M. Bashore, MD, a cardiologist, has been on faculty at the Duke University Medical Center since 1985. He's an expert in the treatment of complex cardiovascular conditions, and was instrumental to establishing programs in valvular heart disease and adult congenital heart disease at Duke. His additional achievements include earning repeat awards for his role as a teacher of cardiology fellows. He holds positions as a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine and the Senior Vice Chief in the Division of Cardiology. This collection contains 2 oral history interviews conducted on October 12 and 16, 2020 by Joseph O'Connell as part of the Department of Medicine's Oral History Project. In the interviews, Bashore discusses his interest in visuals and history related to medicine, his pedagogical approach, and his thoughts on program leadership and restructuring.

W. Allen Addison Oral History Interviews, 2017-2017

Dr. W. Allen Addison, MD, is the Walter L. Thomas Professor Emeritus at the Duke University School of Medicine and a past president of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted in two parts on September 18 and September 19, 2018 by Joseph O'Connell. Throughout the interviews, Winifred Allen Addison and Sally Bender Addison discuss Dr. Addison's medical career from his upbringing in Toccoa, Georgia, through his ultimate position at Duke as Walter L. Thomas Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The topics span Addison's personal life and relationships; his areas of medical specialization; and his experience of Duke University and Duke Medical Center as an institution.

Department of Physical Therapy Records, 1942-2006

Abstract Or Scope
The Department of Physical Therapy at Duke University was established by Helen Kaiser in 1943. In 1970, the program began awarding a Master of Science degree. In 2000, the department transferred from offering a master's degree to offering a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. The collection contains photographs, faculty-student picnic invitations, anniversary buttons, and graduation programs. The photographs include images of students, facilities, and faculty, including Helen Kaiser. The buttons are from the 50th (1993) and 60th (2003) anniversaries of the program. Materials range in date from 1942 to 2006.

Marjorie Goff Nursing Memorabilia, circa 1948

Abstract Or Scope
Marjorie Goff (1925-2017) was one of the first students in Duke University School of Nursing's advanced degree program and received her BSN in 1948. She later served as a Staff Nurse and Assistant in Nursing for Duke Hospital and as an Assistant Instructor in Nursing Arts at Duke University School of Nursing beginning in 1952. After leaving Duke, Goff taught at UNC Greensboro and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, served as a board member of the American Nurses Association and Director of the Northwest Area Health Education Center (NWAHEC), and founded the nursing school at what is now Guilford Technical Community College. This collection contains uniform materials from Goff's time as a student at the School of Nursing. Types of materials include a nursing graduate uniform with long sleeves and RN Cufflinks. Materials date from circa 1948.
