The SBAS was organized by Onyekwere Akwari and three other African-American surgeons in 1989 to support the racial integration of academic surgical departments in the post-civil rights era. Materials date from 1978 to 2017.

Contains cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, U-Matic video cassettes, and 16mm film containing audiovisual materials pertaining to Onyekwere Akwari's personal and professional life. The U-Matic video cassettes are believed to be from the inaugural meeting of the Society of Black American Surgeons (SBAS) in 1989. Materials date from 1974 to 2008, though the bulk is undated.
