Contains Onyekwere Akwari's personal and professional correspondence. Materials are organized chronologically by correspondent, with individual files for major correspondents. Of note is the correspondence located in the "Stead, Eugene A." folder. These emails were given to Akwari by Dr. Louis (Lou) W. Sullivan. The letters document Dr. Stead's attempt to hire Sullivan to an Associate position in 1962-1963. This was denied by Duke University Provost R. Taylor Cole who would only approve Sullivan be hired to an Adjunct Associate position. Sullivan turned down the position and went on to become the President of Morehouse School of Medicine and US Secretary of Health and Human Services under President George H. W. Bush. These letters illustrate how racial, ethic, and gender minorities were historically described and evaluated. Materials date from 1961 to 2018.
