Alfred Blalock (1899-1964) was the surgeon-in-chief of the John Hopkins Hospital, professor, and director of the surgery department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1941-1964). Blalock, Surgical Technician Vivien Thomas, and Pediatric Cardiologist Helen Taussig developed the "blue baby" operation and treatments for surgical shock.
