This series contains memorabilia and artifacts pertaining to David C. Sabiston Jr.'s early education, later career as a surgeon, and as a leader in medical policy and administration. Types of materials include printed materials; science research papers from high school; teaching awards; certificates of appreciation; symposia recognition items; and notes of recognition from regional and international medical schools, associations, and agencies. The series also contains artifacts including academic robes and hoods, a paperweight, and a commemorative glass. Materials date from 1938 to 2009.

Alfred Blalock (1899-1964) was the surgeon-in-chief of the John Hopkins Hospital, professor, and director of the surgery department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1941-1964). Blalock, Surgical Technician Vivien Thomas, and Pediatric Cardiologist Helen Taussig developed the "blue baby" operation and treatments for surgical shock. This series contains correspondence, programs, presentations, articles, curriculum vitae, and speeches relating to Blalock. Materials date from 1940 to 1989.
