Alfred Blalock (1899-1964), surgeon-in-chief of the John Hopkins Hospital, professor, and director of the surgery department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1941-1964), was one of two physicians who developed the "blue baby" operation and treatments for surgical shock. Types of materials include articles; photographs; memorials and tributes; and professional materials pertaining to his career in medicine such as his North Carolina Medical License, diploma from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the letter awarding Dixon with the Memorial Prize in 1965 from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The collection also includes a silver bowl awarded to Dixon for teaching excellence at Duke, as well as a painting of the Schwab mansion in Braddock, Pennsylvania.                 Highland Hospital Records, 1906-1981

                Highland Hospital was a premiere residential psychiatric hospital located in Asheville, North Carolina, owned and operated by Duke University from 1944 to 1980. The bulk of the collection contains records pertaining to the acquisition, administration, expansion of the hospital in the mid-twentieth century, and the sale of the facility in 1980. This includes agreements, annual reports, architectural plans, appraisals, audits, brochures, budgets, clippings, correspondence, data on lawsuits resulting from fire and accident, deeds, fiscal reports, insurance papers, minutes, monthly statements, newsletters, photographs, programs, publications, reports, as well as sale and lease papers. Major subjects in this collection include A. S. Brower, Robert S. Carroll, R. Charman Carroll, and the Duke University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Also includes a small amount of notebooks with nursing lecture notes. The materials date from 1906 to 1981 with the majority of the records including the period between 1939 to 1957 and 1978 to 1980.

The files, among other things, include a glimpse of the perception of mental disorders and approaches to psychiatric treatment in mid-twentieth century America and the trials of running a small, ever expanding hospital. The records do not contain information on particular patients unless they died at the hospital and that information does not include patient records or notes. Topics include the 1948 fire, staffing issues, local real estate, mid-century modern furniture, and institutional kitchens. The record dates range from 1906-1978. The majority of the records are from 1939-1957.

                  Watts Hospital Records, 1909-1940

                  Watts Hospital, located in Durham, North Carolina, was the city's first hospital. It was funded by George W. Watts and opened in 1895 as a private 22-bed, modern hospital, dedicated to the care of Durham's white citizens. African American citizens were cared for at Lincoln Hospital, which opened in 1901. By 1909, Watts Hospital's 22-bed facility was too small for a fast growing Durham, and a newer facility was built on 25 acres at the intersection of Club Boulevard and Board Street. This is where the hospital remained until it closed in 1976 when it merged with Lincoln Hospital when Durham County General Hospital (now Duke Regional Hospital) opened. The grounds and buildings of the hospital's 1909 campus were converted into the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, which opened in 1980.                           Personal/Biographical, 1910-2004

                          Contains materials that document Easley's personal life. Types of materials in this series are awards and honors; biographical information; Easley's philanthropy, clippings mostly pertaining to Easley's career and accomplishments but also includes an article describing an automobile collision on Guess Road at the Eno River bridge that caused permanent damage to Easley's leg, as it was left shorter than the other after the fractures healed and required her to wear special orthopedic shoes for the rest of her life. Series also contains headshots and portraits of Easley and photographs of her at various times during her life: her Idaho wedding, late 1940s photo in Durham with her husband before a trip; Easley at a medical meeting in Havana, Cuba; photographs of Easley with her husband and their orchid collection; and other photographs of Easley. Memorial materials are also included. The bulk of the memorial materials pertain to Easley's death, but there is a small amount of materials about the Boulware sisters (Lula Inez Boulware and Mary Ella Boulware Taylor) who worked for Easley and her husband. Easley met the sisters during the Great Depression in the 1930s in a hallway outside of a Duke Hospital operating room. Their bother, Glenn, had recently died, and a Duke doctor wanted his body for dissection at Duke. Their mother, Mattie McCullough Boulware, wanted to bury her son's body. At the time, Lula and Mary were working in the operating rooms at Duke and the doctor told them if they did not turn over their brother's body they would lose their jobs. Easley intervened, Lula and Mary kept their jobs, and their brother was interred. In the early 1940s, when Easley opened her own medical practice, she employed both sisters. Materials date from 1910 to 2004.
